Secara garis besar, sekte/aliran dalam ajaran Hindu dewasa ini dapat digolongkan dalam 3 kelompok besar, yaitu:
1. Shaivism (Saivism, Śaivism)

Sekte dalam ajaran Hindu yang menempatkan dewa Shiwa sebagai personafikasi Tuhan Yang Maha Esa, disamping fungsinya sebagai dewa pelebur. Dapat dikatakan sekte ini merupakan yang terbesar dan tersebar ke segala penjuru dibandingkan dengan sekte lainnya.

There are two versions of Shiva sahasranama-one in Linga Purana (Being taught by Lord Krishna to sage Markandeya) and the other which occurs in Anushasanika Parva of Mahabaratha.

The Shiva Mahimna Stotra is very popular among the devotees of Lord Shiva and is considered one of the best among all Stotras (or Stutis) offered to Lord Shiva. The legend about the composition of this Stotra is as follows.
